It comprises a lot of components and one of them is braking pads.
What are brake pads?
Brake pads are one of numerous parts which make up a disc braking system. When the brake pedal is applied, brake pads are pressed by callipers against the spinning rotor and, as a result, the car slows down.
What are their main elements and functions?
These components feature a sandwich-like structure. It comprises the following parts:
Brake pad plate. That is the base of the car part. It holds the element in the calliper and transfers the thermal energy to the neighbouring components.
Friction material and the intermediate layer. The friction material glued to the plate sticks to the surface of the rotor and makes the wheel stop spinning.
Damping. Most brake pads are fitted with this component. It can be a spring, paint or varnish, foil or sheet steel. It is used to reduce the noise produced while braking.
When is it time to check your brake pads?
When brake pads are pressed against the rotor, a thin layer of the friction material is worn away. What are the symptoms of bad pads?
Squealing when braking. A wear indicator is responsible for producing a squealing sound during braking if it’s time to replace the components.
Metallic grinding noise. The friction material can wear away completely and, when the brake pedal is applied, a bare metal plate faces the rotor making a characteristic metal noise.
Longer braking distance. Worn-out pads can no longer ensure high braking performance and the braking distance becomes longer.
Can brake pads be repaired?
Brake pads are considered to be consumables which means they have to be replaced only. However, it isn’t a problem to find suitable components as lots of automotive brands offer their products. Most popular are Bosch, Wagner, Ferodo, ATE, etc.
