Purchasing an Electric Car: Mistakes and Pitfalls to Avoid
Buying an electric car requires having different skills and knowledge than a conventional one.
Many countries are heading toward green and electric cars. For example, UAE registered 2473 electric vehicles and 6016 hybrid cars in 2021.
Thus, before you sell car in Dubai and convert to hybrid or electric, some research will do you some good.
Here is a compilation of advice that will allow you to choose the right electric car, and in particular its technical characteristics, the options to check, and therefore the pitfalls and mistakes you should avoid making.
You should pay attention to the proposed technical options and not neglect them.
- For example, on a Renault Zoe 2, the CCS socket will be optional. Yet, without the CCS socket, it will be impossible to exploit the fast charges in direct current, which is vital on long journeys.
Slow charges maximum limit is 22 kW, i.e. one hour to recover 22 kWh. A little slow when you know that a conventional battery is between 50 and 70 kWh.
- Some versions of the Volkswagen ID3 have a DC load (CCS) with a limit to 45 kW. But adding 710 euros, we have the possibility of unclamping it at 110 kW (it’s a shame because a clamp has been artificially installed. Exactly as with certain heat engines available in several power levels).
- Some offer vital cables as an option. It is therefore imperative to have a cable for the mains (the one you will use every day) but also another type 2 cable to use the current terminals alternative that we find a lot in town (which go up to 22 kW).
- Finally, on some models, there is an optional heat pump that improves the efficiency of the car thanks to an optimal heating and air conditioning system.
The efficiency of the heat pump is among the best, especially for heating which is then embodied by very energy-consuming resistances when it is not present.
The thermal management of the car is also favored with better cooling and heating of the battery (in sports driving or on the supercharger it is necessary to cool, and in winter it is necessary to heat the battery).
Important Technical Data
Before you go for car valuation in Dubai, there are key features to look for in a car.
Beyond the options, there are technical characteristics that will promote the comfort of use and the durability over time of the car (and therefore the car valuation process when reselling!)
- Size of the Battery
If some choose the size of the battery according to their daily needs, it must be taken into account that this factor plays on many other aspects than autonomy.
The bigger your battery, the longer it will last. Because the allotted number of cycles that will lead to capacity losses will then take longer to reach.
If your battery tolerates 1500 recharge/discharge cycles, it will take you much longer to perform them with a 100 kWh battery than with a 25 kWh one. This is the main weakness of hybrids which have very small batteries.
In addition, a large battery incorporates more cells, so it will be easier for the power electronics to manage the overheating. When cells become hot, we put them aside and we use those that are the coldest.
- Car Type
Opt for a car that was originally designed to be electric rather than a conversion.
It is better to have a good integration of the batteries and a motor at the rear rather than at the front, so you can exploit the high torque of the motor.
- Motor
A powerful engine guarantees better efficiency.
The heat loss of an electric motor has a link to the resistance, and this resistance increases with the temperature (hence the idea of approaching absolute zero with nitrogen for example, which then offers superconductivity.
Moreover, if you have two motors, the regeneration will be all the more important on deceleration.
- Charging
If the manufacturer says the car charges 70 kW, you will most of the time get around 45/50 kW with sometimes a rapid peak towards 65 kW (in the optimal area of the battery, where it can swallow the most of electrons).
And so to speak, it is perfect to be between 100 and 150 kW, no need to have more since the higher the power, the more it damages the battery.
With 100 kW we recover optimally, with an excellent compromise between charging speed and respect for the battery. A load of 250 kW is starting to become too high, and it is best to limit yourself to a maximum of 150 kW.
Indeed, the technology being very different, it is now necessary to study the object under new perspectives to avoid making mistakes. Have a safe ride!
